The colleagues of cleaner Linda Morrison can now afford to put tyres on the car or take their kids to the movies. But what is far more important than cash in the pocket is they finally feel respected. Ms Morrison, 63, is one of almost 150 cleaners at Canberra Hospital rewarded with a bonus after having their pay frozen for almost five years. “The cleaners haven’t had a pay rise since June 2012,” she said. “There’s been a lot of pressure on the workers as the cost of living rises. “But to be given this bonus is like winning the lottery. It’s like we have been respected.” Ms Morrison has worked at the hospital for nearly eight years and was one of the United Voice delegates who negotiated the bonus with ACT Health.

Nurses working at Princess Margaret Hospital have warned they will boycott the new children’s hospital unless the State Government can prove the lead in water has gone. Australian Nursing Federation State secretary Mark Olson said today that hundreds of nurses had responded to a union survey, in which 95 per cent made it clear they did not want to work at the Perth Children’s Hospital until they were satisfied the lead issue had been completely resolved.

The doctor who accused his patient of trying to extort money from him after she gave him oral sex in a consultation room has been banned from practising medicine and told he cannot apply to practise again for at least five years. Vipin Lal’s long-term patient, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was cleared of trying to blackmail him after a District Court trial in 2015. A recent judgment from the State Administrative Tribunal led to Dr Lal being struck of the medical register. SAT president Justice Jeremy Curthoys said that “no penalty short of removal from the register is sufficient to mark the disapproval of the conduct, or bring home to Dr Lal, the magnitude of his failings, or adequately protect the public.”
