Terrified residents of a retirement village in Melbourne’s west have locked themselves off from their suburb amid fears of rampant crime. Point Cook Village — a gated community that had shut its gates only at night — has been closing itself off from the outside world during the daytime at weekends. Residents who voted for the change are anxious about a spate of crime in the area, which has included aggravated burglaries, car jackings and a shooting only 1km away. Bike-riding troublemakers have also strayed on to the grounds, yelling and taunting residents.
