Attacks on paramedics have more than doubled in two years as drug- and alcohol-fuelled patients take their anger out on first responders. Paramedics are exposed to violence or aggression 13 times each day. The ambulance union has received calls for security guards to accompany paramedics when they’re called out late at night or to known violence hot spots.

A number of deaths have been confirmed at a Tasmanian nursing home during an influenza outbreak. The fatalities happened at the Strathdevon aged care facility in Latrobe, near Devonport, in Tasmania’s north-west, which is run by Uniting AgeWell, an organisation of the Uniting Church in Australia. The deaths at Strathdevon came after confirmation of the deaths of seven elderly residents at St John’s Retirement Village in Wangaratta, in Victoria, which is run by the Anglican Church, during an influenza outbreak.

A s.394 (Unfair dismissal) application by Sebastian Sajish Kanamkombil against St John of God Health Care Inc is on foot in the Fair Work Commission in Perth. Deputy President Beaumont has ruled that an application for an order pursuant to s.590(2)(c) for production of documents be granted in part.

Two doctors have been immediately stood down over allegations of sexual assault against two female medical students at Royal Darwin Hospital. The hospital’s director of medical services, Alison Maclean, said both of the alleged incidents happened at the hospital and involved two male doctors both from the same medical department.

Twenty-five elderly residents and 10 staff members at Barongarook Gardens have been struck down by the gastro epidemic and the aged-care facility has been locked down for a fortnight. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was first informed of the outbreak on August 17.

Seven people have died and 123 have been infected in another large-scale flu outbreak at a Victorian retirement home. The seven victims were residents at St John’s Retirement Village in Wangaratta in the state’s north-east.
