Taxpayers may have to foot the legal bill for former Health Services Union boss Kathy Jackson when she stands trial accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Jackson, 49, appeared before the Victorian County Court on Friday for a directions hearing about a trial over the 166 charges she faces. The former union boss has been charged with 18 counts of theft, 147 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception, and one charge of obtaining property by deception. Her lawyer told judge Lisa Hannan that Jackson had a “dire” financial situation and would need to apply for Legal Aid to defend her at trial. Her lawyer also said there had been a tragedy in Jackson’s family and her stepson had died, with his death the subject of a coronial inquiry.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service has sacked an employee following serious workplace bullying and harassment allegations. The sacking follows a year-long independent investigation into workplace bullying within the health service conducted by consultant firm Ashdale. Since the investigation began, another staff member has resigned from the Ayr Health Service. THHS acting chief executive Kieran Keyes said he had recently reviewed two completed reports from Ashdale into workplace bullying. “Allegations against one staff member have been unsubstantiated and they are transitioning back to work, while a second staff member has had their employment terminated,” he said. “I’ve recently received two other reports from Ashdale. “Due to the nature and complexity of these reviews, I’ve sought additional information which will help to ensure the decision I take is based on the best possible information.” Mr Keyes said there was one other ongoing review that he was expecting a report on soon. “These reviews have been complex and longstanding issues within a small number of teams across our large health service,” he said.

On a night of drinking, two mates detoured to a retirement village and used golf clubs to “smash” windows at the village. Bronson Phillip Whitney and Patrick John Sullivan appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday, both pleading guilty to wilful damage. The court heard the pair caused damages worth $546 on August 13 at a Torquay location. Police prosecutor Donna Sperling said the men had “been drinking” and “did not recall” the incident. Both were ordered to repay half of the cost of the damage, of $273 each. They were also fined $500 each. Whitney, 19, of South Grafton and Sullivan, 22, of Torquay, both represented themselves in court.
