A reported assault at an aged care centre where patients from the condemned Oakden facility were transferred is being investigated by police. SA Police has declined to provide key details about the incident. It is the first reported case of assault at the Northgate facility since residents moved there from the former Oakden nursing home in June, after revelations of systemic mistreatment.

About 30 residents were evacuated from an aged care home in Golden Square after a fire in the automatic door. Golden Square and Bendigo CFA crews responded to the call-out to the Golden Oaks facility in Stoneham Street after a fire appeared to start in the electrical component above the automatic sliding door. A staff member put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher and residents were evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Canberra Hospital cleaners have won the right to strike after almost six years without a pay rise. The Australian Electoral Commission declared the specialist cleaners, who earn about $21 an hour, successfully voted to take a range of industrial actions, including a ban on cleaning toilets and collecting waste, as well as stopping work. The cleaners received a small bonus earlier this year, but have been locked in a fight with ACT Health to bring their wages in line with public service cleaners for more than a year. About 100 cleaners are affected and the group have called on the ACT government to fix its contract with ISS – the company which employs them – to allow for a pay rise. The company claims it cannot pay the cleaners any more than an extra 64 cents an hour, due to insufficient funds in its contract.

The culture at the disgraced Oakden nursing home in Adelaide appears to have been transferred to another facility, a victim’s family member has said, with police saying three assault investigations were underway.
