Police are investigating a number of alleged assaults on a patient at Caulfield hospital in Melbourne’s south-east, after video evidence emerged of the incident. Investigators have been told a 33-year-old man was assaulted by a 30-year-old Cranbourne West man on January 22 this year. Alfred Health, which manages the hospital, said the family had approached them last week with the footage. “The video material presented to us by the family is distressing and shocking — and not in keeping with the culture of advanced care patients and families should experience in our hospitals,” Alfred Health said in the statement. “We are continuing to meet with the patient’s family and thank them for bringing these issues to our attention,” it said. “Alfred Health is cooperating fully with the police investigation.” The hospital said it was also conducting an internal investigation.

More than 40 outback, rural and remote nurses tell their engaging stories in Bill Marsh’s latest book, which is part of the Great Australian Stories collection. The well-known author has dedicated his 16th book to Care Flight NT, Kakadu National Park’s rangers and nursing and support staff from Jabiru who helped save his life. Following a near-fatal fall from a cliff in Kakadu while researching his book, he experienced first-hand the care of many nurses and support staff. The stories have one common thread — the dedication to a profession that sees the best and worst of humanity, sometimes in the toughest of environments.
