A further complaint about the Wellington doctor accused of having sexual relationships with vulnerable women patients has been received by the Medical Council. Deane Drew is being investigated by the Medical Council’s professional conduct committee (PCC) for allegations he began sexual relationships with four women patients, dating back to 1991. He has declined to comment.

Geelong nursing and midwifery students will receive more realistic training following the opening of simulated hospital wards at Deakin University’s waterfront campus. The state-of-the-art simulation centre will provide students with examples of real-life patient scenarios they might face on the job. Interim head of Deakin’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Nikki Phillips, said the purpose-built centre provided a safe, supportive and realistic environment for students to develop core skills.

The latest cohort of nurses and midwives has started work today in the Far North. More than 40 new registered nurses and midwives gathered at Cairns Hospital this morning for orientation before commencing duties at health facilities across the region. About 60 per cent of the group — the second intake for 2018 — are under 25, with the youngest aged 20 and oldest over 45 years. They will be employed on 12-month contracts, with some working in areas such as intensive care, medical and surgical wards, or at rural hospitals such as Babinda and Mossman. The nurses and midwives will be supported by staff included clinical facilitators, nurse educators, and nurse preceptors, to assist them in workshops, clinical days, reflective journaling and debriefing sessions.
