The ACTU says women trapped in violent situations need paid leave to help them relocate their families. Paid leave for victims of domestic violence could be a matter of life and death, a support worker and union officials say. Calling on the federal government to legislate for 10 days of paid leave, the ACTU Women’s Committee Chair, Julia Fox said the measure was vital to help those trapped in abusive relationships to leave. Her comments came on Tuesday as about 80 delegates, including state and federal ministers, gathered in Adelaide for a two-day summit looking at practical ways to stop violence against women and children.

A personal trainer who admitted presenting a fake medical certificate to a court in a bid to get his licence back has been put on a 15-month Community Corrections Order, and spared jail. Jason Nielsen, 38, walked from the Geelong County Court yesterday after he was sentenced on one charge of perverting the course of justice, which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail. Judge Susan Cohen told the court she spared Nielsen jail due to his guilty plea “at the earliest possible opportunity”. The court heard Nielsen, a personal trainer for nine years, presented a fake medical certificate to the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on August 30 last year indicating he had passed a drug screen facilitated by a Ryrie St doctor on August 18.

A woman who allegedly assaulted a mental health nurse at Canberra Hospital has been taken back to that hospital for a psychiatric assessment. The woman appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning facing charges related to the alleged assault and property damage, as well as new unrelated charges for negligent driving and drug driving. The woman allegedly assaulted a nurse in the hospital’s adult mental health unit in September. The new charges related to a driving incident in July. She told the court she had struggled with her mental health in recent years as her children had been taken into protective care and their father had been in the Alexander Maconochie Centre. She said she had not had care of her children for five to six years, and in the past year she had had another baby and was still coming to terms with that child being taken into care.
