A cleaner accused of unleashing a vicious attack on her 92-year-old client after claiming she was threatened with a cane and a knife has been refused bail in Sydney. Indonesian citizen Hanny Papanicolaou, 35, has been charged with attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after arriving unannounced at her elderly client’s home in Ashbury on January 2. Her barrister James Trevallion made a bail application in Burwood Local Court on Wednesday, submitting the 35-year-old acted in self defence. But magistrate Louise McManus refused it on the basis that she wasn’t satisfied any conditions would mitigate the risk Papanicolaou poses to her alleged victim and community, and the possibility of interference with witnesses. The matter was adjourned to March 6.

A carer has been charged after she allegedly assaulted five residents at an aged care home near Wollongong. The 48-year-old female carer allegedly assaulted three women and two men aged between 74 and 87 at the aged care facility in Warilla between October and December 2018. The woman was on Wednesday charged with five counts of assault and was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on February 27.

Up-and-coming indigenous leaders of North Queensland’s health sector have been honoured at a pre-graduation ceremony at James Cook University. There were 138 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who celebrated their achievements in front of their friends and family, leaving their handprints on paintings as a lasting legacy of their time at the university. The students graduated from nine undergraduate courses and four postgraduate courses including nursing science, occupational therapy, veterinary sciences, and public health.
