Residents at a Gold Coast aged care home been evacuated after a fire broke out in the building. Firefighters arrived at Kirrahaven Residential Care Centre in Coolangatta about 1pm after fire alarms went off. A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said there was “a small fire in a storage cupboard”. Crews ventilated the building before leaving. It is understood no one was injured. Queensland Police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service are investigating.

A retired remote area doctor who worked with murdered outback nurse Gayle Woodford has told a coronial inquest that Fregon was the most violent community she had ever worked in. Mrs Woodford’s body was found in a shallow grave near Fregon in South Australia’s remote Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in March 2016. Mrs Woodford had worked as a nurse with Nganampa Health Council (NHC) for nearly five years and was on call the night she was killed.

A female paramedic has been taken to hospital after being kicked unconscious by a burglar breaking into a St John ambulance station north of Auckland. The woman had just returned alone to the Warkworth ambulance station on Brown Rd at about 11.30pm last night after finishing treating a patient. St John director of operations Norma Lane said the intruder then attacked her and kicked her unconscious. “The paramedic was able to signal for St John Clinical Communications and police support before being rendered unconscious,” Lane said. She was taken to North Shore hospital in a moderate condition before being discharged this morning. “This is a despicable and unacceptable act on our colleague,” Lane said.

Two nurses were assaulted in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital last night, allegedly by a visiting relative of a patient. Police say a 25-year-old man pushed one of them, causing her to fall. He then closed a door which allegedly struck another nurse. It happened about 9.30pm Monday night while the alleged was visiting a relative. The Osborne Park man was charged and will face court next month. Assaults on nurses are on the rise, with the McGowan Government launching a crackdown six months ago. It followed the stabbing of a nurse at Royal Perth Hospital in May.
