A nurse who admitted to falsifying employment references for positions overseas has been fined and censured. Conrado Santos, applied for two positions in Queensland last year and successfully asked two line managers at Waikato Hospital to provide written references. Mr Santos altered their written words and set up fake email accounts purporting to belong to his two managers, from which he sent his polished-up versions. He also created a false email account for one of the perspective employers and told the two line managers to email their references there. The email accounts were created from Hotmail and Outlook accounts. Mr Santos embellished the original references and sent them on. He admitted four charges of professional misconduct at a Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal hearing in Wellington in November last year.

After missing out on the top job at National Australia Bank, Craig Drummond, the incoming boss of Medibank Private, is set to receive a handy pay rise, even as the company grapples with mounting pressure to cut its own costs and rein in rising charges from health care providers. Medibank Private announced Mr Drummond would take up the role on July 4, replacing outgoing chief executive George Savvides. Mr Savvides took home $2 million in the year to June 2015, with a base salary of $1 million topped up by $303,000 of short-term incentives, $602,147 of performance rights, and other sundry entitlements.

Gold Coast University Hospital staff embroiled in a fraud scandal have been allowed to return to work. Five doctors, a nurse and an administration employee from the hospital’s cardiology unit are accused of making fraudulent patient referrals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. They were stood down with full pay last month while an independent investigation was carried out. Gold Coast Health Service chief executive Ron Calvert said the investigator had finished the report, which will be considered by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
