Paramedics across NSW are being trained to sedate aggressive patients with drugs as the extent of the violence being faced by our emergency service personnel is revealed. A parliamentary inquiry into violence against emergency services last week published the state government’s submission, which revealed ‘chemical restraint’ would be available to all ambulance officers across the state by December this year. The submission also revealed the extent of violent attacks against NSW Police, Ambulance officers, Firefighters and SES workers. The drastic new method for ambos uses a sedation drug to calm violent and aggressive patients, which had previously only been available to a select few specially trained paramedics at each station.

The saga involving former Fair Work Commission vice president Michael Lawler will continue, after he launched Federal Court action against Employment Minister Michaelia Cash for not taking into account his mental illness during an investigation into his conduct in office. Mr Lawler also admitted that participating in an episode of the ABC’s Four Corners alongside his partner and ex-union boss Kathy Jackson was an “error of judgment”. The review was commissioned after serious criticism was levelled at Mr Lawler for supporting Ms Jackson as she battled fraud allegations from her time at the helm of the Health Services Union. He was on nine months’ sick leave, and still receiving his full $430,000 annual salary. Mr Lawler quit his position in March, less than 24 hours before he was due to respond to the investigation’s final report. Senator Cash tabled the findings in Federal Parliament a fortnight later. The review by former Federal Court judge Peter Heerey QC found that Mr Lawler should have been removed from his position because of “proved incapacity” and “misbehaviour”. Documents lodged in the Federal Court show Mr Lawler is calling for a judicial review into the decision to launch the investigation, the conduct of Senator Cash during the course of the investigation, and the decision to table the final report despite Mr Lawler having already resigned from his position.

A body found on a suburban Hobart foreshore could be that of an elderly woman reported missing from a nearby retirement village. Police made the discovery on Monday morning near Mitcham Avenue at Claremont and are seeking information from anyone who may have seen a woman at a cliff top area in the vicinity since Saturday.

An elderly man is in a serious condition and will undergo surgery after he was repeatedly stabbed in the neck, arms and hands at an aged-care facility in Sydney’s south. It is alleged the 72-year-old man was set upon by another man, also 72, who entered his room around 7pm on Sunday. The pair were known to each other, police say. The injured man was taken to St George Hospital and is expected to have surgery. His alleged elderly attacker was charged with one count of causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and remanded in custody to appear at Sutherland Local Court.
