A paramedic attacked by a drunk French backpacker she was trying to treat has read a powerful victim impact statement to the court telling of her ongoing physical and mental pain. The Cairns Magistrates Court has heard Timothee Rousselle, 21, had reportedly downed a bottle of scotch and some cask wine before witnesses later called an ambulance to the Asylum Backpackers in Cairns North on September 28. They began treating him before he attacked paramedic Natalie Fitzgerald, punching her in the face and pulling her from the ambulance before her partner intervened and police arrived. Ms Fitzgerald said she did not “harbour any ill feeling” towards Rousselle, but was suffering the ongoing effects which were impacting her work.

Another review of South Australia’s scandal-plagued child protection system has been ordered after the arrest of a residential care worker who has been accused of abusing young children. Heavy “grocery items” have been flung at an ambulance in Melbourne’s CBD from a 25-storey tower while paramedics were helping a patient. The police ambulance triage team, with two police officers and a paramedic, heard three loud bangs on their vehicle in A’Beckett St at 12.25am on Sunday as they finished their work with the patient. They found a number of grocery items had been thrown to the ground, denting the ambulance and at least one other vehicle in the area, but no culprit has been identified.
