An alleged sexual assault that occurred when mental health patients were placed in confinement together has exposed a litany of issues with Barwon Health’s practice. The organisation will be put under the microscope by Chief Psychiatrist Neil Coventry after his audit found multiple improvements were needed to its acute adult impatient mental health service. Victorian Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the audit uncovered “serious deficiencies” that needed to be quickly addressed.

A crucial safety system that should have been used to report the under-dosing of chemotherapy drugs at two Adelaide hospital is rarely used by medical staff, SA Health has found. The review into the Central Adelaide Local Health Network was commissioned to help improve patient care, learn from adverse incidents and reassure the community about safety. It found the Safety Learning System, which is used to log mistakes and near misses, has rarely been used but recent adverse events meant a “small number of specialties” were using it more.

Remote nurses attending after-hours call-outs will soon be accompanied by a trusted local community member to increase their safety following attacks on health workers, the Northern Territory Health Department said. The Government is implementing all 14 recommendations from a review of remote area nurse safety, which was released today.

The head of Monash University’s Malaysia campus, Helen Bartlett, is set to take the reins of Federation University after an extended search to find a replacement for retiring head David Battersby. Professor Barlett, who has been chief executive and pro vice-chancellor of Monash University Malaysia since 2013, has held senior leadership roles in health and social sciences at universities in Britain, Hong Kong and Australia.
