Investigations should be widened into the alleged mistreatment of an Adelaide nursing home’s residents, South Australian senator Nick Xenophon has said. The SA Government is looking into issues from last year at the Makk and McLeay Nursing Home at Oakden, including when the family of resident Bob Spriggs complained he was overmedicated and had unexplained bruises. Senator Xenophon wants the Senate to launch an inquiry if SA fails to widen its current probe.

A former union boss has been granted bail after being charged with raping a woman. The man, who cannot legally be named, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday where his lawyer Terry Fisher said he denied the single charge of rape. His matter was adjourned to the same court on April 24.
