Former New South Wales nursing home employee Garry Steven Davis, 29, has been jailed for at least 30 years for murdering two Newcastle residents and attempting to murder a third. Davis injected the residents with large doses of insulin at the SummitCare nursing home in Wallsend over a two-day period in October, 2013. Residents Gwen Fowler, 83, and Ryan Kelly, 80, died as a result of the injections, while Audrey Manuel, 91, recovered and has since died from unrelated causes. In sentencing Davis to a maximum 40 years in jail, Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme said: “There’s no explanation as to why he did it.” Davis “acted with extreme callousness… it’s as if he thought their lives were worthless”, Justice Hulme added. Davis will be eligible for parole in December 2044.
