A nurse who raped a patient as she recovered from surgery in a Melbourne hospital has been locked up for at least six years. Singaporean Jefferson Augustine has also had his visa cancelled and is likely to be deported out of the country on his release. The County Court heard his shocking breach of trust also extended outside of his workplace where he raped and sexually assaulted two backpackers staying at his home. The serial sex offender pleaded guilty to three charges of rape and two charges of sexual assault. Augustine, 25, was the night duty nurse at Epworth Hospital in Richmond when he raped a woman during what she initially thought was a routine medical procedure on August 26, 2015. The victim later told a friend, who is a nurse and recommended she report it to the hospital as his behaviour was concerning. The hospital reported it to police, but the victim didn’t wish to proceed with charges. It wasn’t until his other sexual offending was discovered in March 2016, that police contacted her again and she made a statement.
